ARTIST STATEMENT
As an artist, I have performed music, danced, and even painted. Creativity is a part of me and I have used different mediums all my life as forms of expression. Art, to me is a way to transport myself and others to a different ‘place’ of my own creation. When I am creating, I tend to get ‘lost’ in the mood of that creation. If I am successful, the listener or the observer will be transported to this ‘place’ with me and share the mood that I am trying to communicate.
Today, as a music teacher, I find joy in helping students to find their own ways of expression. I try to cultivate their talents with a solid musical foundation and then go further as they learn to not only recreate the technical notes, but to use these skills to create musical ‘pictures’ that they can share with others. Together, we come up with inspiration for creating these musical ‘pictures’ through understanding the musical composition and the use of imagery. I love the feeling of satisfaction I get when a student is excited about a work of art they have created.
I believe that talent, inspiration, and dedication are the elements necessary to grow creatively for an artist of any age, and that all three of these traits must be developed in order to nurture their art form. Through one-on-one time with each student I strive to help them develop each of these areas. Together, we find their obvious talents, and then dig deeper to find other talents they did not even know they had. We look for inspirations behind the music, in the music, and of their own making. I teach each student the value of dedication as they achieve their goals one small step at a time and then finally look back to see they have achieved more than they ever thought possible.
Watching these young talents grow into young creative adults is something that inspires me daily. As I try to share what I can with them, they are continually sharing and enriching my life by bringing into it new perspectives. Ultimately, I look for the beauty and creativity in everything and have tremendous respect for the dedication that binds together talent and inspiration. There is an endless canvas of possibilities out there with inspiration all around us. I find inspiration comes from the people around me and from nature. While I am teaching music today, I believe that I will continue to use different mediums as a way to communicate the beautiful moments that are all around us.
